Neil was a foundation governor in a one-form entry Catholic primary school in East Lancashire from 2002 until his retirement from the board in July 2021. He became Chair of Governors in 2012 and occupied that role until his resignation overseeing two OFSTED inspections where the school was deemed “Good.”
In 2016 Neil was appointed as a National Leader of Governance (NLG) and was trained later that year in conducting External Reviews of Governance. In 2020-21 Neil undertook seven reviews of governance, all in primary maintained schools, and mentored one chair formally and others informally. Neil is a tutor for Lancashire’s Governor Services writing and delivering governor training. He is a regular contributor to social media groups such as @ukgovchat.
Neil’s particular area of interest is around culture and ethos and ensuring these, and schools’ values, are intertwined in an ambitious, timed and measurable vision for the school or academy. Neil’s specific area of expertise would be in the primary maintained sector. Although he is based in North West England he can communicate with all governors without subtitles!
